In the Fellowship of the Ring, Galadriel's gift to Gimli may seem a thoughtful and kind gift on the surface, but actually has a more in-depth meaning. Thank
Then the Lady unbraided one of her long tresses, and cut off three golden hairs, and laid them in Gimli’s hand. ‘These words shall go with the gift,’ she said. 'Here is the gift of Celeborn and Galadriel to the leader of your Company,' she said to Aragorn, and she gave him a sheath that had been made to fit his sword. It was overlaid with a tracery of flowers and leaves wrought of silver and gold, and on it were set in elven runes formed of many gems the name Andúril and the lineage of the sword.

[Gimli bows his head, sadly.] Galadriel: "Needless were none of the deeds of Gandalf in life. We do not yet know his whole purpose." Galadriel: "Do not let the great emptiness of Khazad-dûm fill your heart, Gimli, son of Glóin." [The Dwarf looks up as her words.] Galadriel: "For the world has grown full of peril. As he requested, Gimli gets a single strand of Galadriel's hair to set in crystal. And Frodo gets a crystal pendant from which shines the light of Eärendil, the Evening Star. In the course of the adventure, Gimli aids the Ring-bearer Frodo Baggins, participates in the War of the Ring, and becomes close friends with Legolas, overcoming an ancient enmity of Dwarves and Elves.
Bilbo Baggins was one of Gloin's companions in reclaiming the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. Gimli was born in 2879. He was of the royal line of Durin I. Yes, Gimli was in love with Galadriel, yet it was not the romantic love as it is understood now-a-days. The love between Gimli and Galadriel was the culmination of admiration, respect, friendship. There was nothing more than that.

According to the Redbook of Westmarch, he set sail with Legolas after Aragorn's death out of a desire to see Galadriel again, and that this strange request may have been granted. Gimli, being a dwarf, would have died a natural death eventually just as Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam would have (according to Tolkien). Gimli is unusual, one might think, in this respect.
Gimli recognizes, just as Galadriel does, that his time is ending–the time of Elves and Dwarves is fading as the memory of the Elder Days slowly disappears from Middle-earth. His heart is given to the Morning that is past and passing.

I don't have the extended version of the movie with me - so I'm writing some of the preliminary dialogue off the top of my head. Galadriel also has unusual compassion: she reaches out to Gimli when Celeborn accuses the Dwarves of rousing Durin's Bane, the Balrog, in Moria, saying: "Dark is the water of Kheled-zâram, and cold are the springs of Kibil-nâla, and fair were the many-pillared halls of Khazad-dûm in Elder Days before the fall of mighty kings beneath the stone" (2.7.28). ‘But the Dwarves did not make the evil,’ said Gimli. ‘I said not so; yet evil came,’ answered Legolas sadly” (332).
